United Nations Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, visits Sierra Leone

The United Nations Secretary-General, Kofi Annan made two-day official visit to Sierra Leone from 2-3 July 2006. Mr. Annan arrived from Banjul, The Gambia, where he attended the African Union (AU) Summit. The Secretary-General was accompanied by Mrs. Nane Annan, the Under Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Mr. Jean-Marie Guehenno, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General in West Africa, Mr. Ameddou Ould Abdallah, and other senior staff from UN Headquarters in New York.

While in Freetown, Mr. Annan held discussions with President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, Government Ministers, the United Nations Country Team and U.N. staff in Sierra Leone and visited the Mongolian Contingent responsible for the protection of the Special Court in Sierra Leone. He also met with the President, the Registrar and the Acting Prosecutor of the Special Court for Sierra Leone, as well as the press. The Secretary-General left Freetown on 3 July for Liberia. The last visit of the Secretary-General to Sierra Leone was in December 2000.
