United Nations Volunteer Delegation Travel to Sierra LeonePress release, 22 May 2006 The United Nations Volunteers programme (UNV) is the volunteer arm of the United Nations. It was created by the UN General Assembly in 1970 to serve as an operational partner in development cooperation at the request of UN member states. It reports to the UNDP and works through their country offices around the world. The UNV headquarters in Bonn will be fielding a mission to Sierra Leone from 22 to 26 May 2006.The objective of the mission is to explore how to enhance UNV’s contribution to the UNDP country programme and decide on future activities for UNV. The mission will allow the UNV to meet with other UN agencies, to assess UNV’s impact, discuss eventual problems and plan future interventions. Mr. Jeremias Blaser, UNV Programme Specialist is expected to be making a presentation to the students of Fourah Bay College on ‘the Role of UNV in conflict/post conflict environment in Africa’, at 16.00hrs on Thursday, 25 May 2006.
