Volunteers celebrate their contribution to the Development of Sierra Leone

05-12-2006

In a ceremony at Miatta Conference Centre in Freetown on 5 December, volunteers working in Sierra Leone were honoured for their contribution in the development of the country. The ceremony was the highlight of almost a week of activities to recognise International Volunteer Day (IVD) 2006.

Adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1985, IVD is celebrated around the globe by governments, the UN system, civil society organizations and volunteers. IVD offers an opportunity for volunteer organizations and individual volunteers to make visible their contributions - at local, national and international levels - to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. Over the years, rallies, parades, community volunteering projects, environmental awareness, free medical care and advocacy campaigns have all featured prominently on IVD.

Sierra Leone hosted several activities on the week leading up to International Volunteer Day 2006. On Sunday, 3 December volunteers worked with the Sierra Leone Roads Authority to paint key zebra crossings at schools and hospitals in Freetown. Monday, 4 December saw a lively discussion on voluntarism on Sierra Leone Broadcasting Service (SLBS) TV. On Tuesday, 5 December International Volunteer Day was celebrated beginning in the morning with a float parade in Freetown from Victoria Park to Miatta Conference Centre. This was followed by the official launch of the IVD celebrations by the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Mr. S. Huggins, heads of volunteer organisations and UNDP representatives, including UNDP Country Director, Mrs. Nancy Asanga.
