Government to Mainstream HIV and AIDS into Ministry Plans

Press Release 04-04-2008

Freetown, Sierra Leone --- Tuesday, 1 April 2008. A consultative meeting on mainstreaming HIV and AIDS took place on the 26th March 2007, at the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development in Freetown. The meeting was organised by the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the National AIDS Secretariat (NAS), to inform senior representatives in each Ministry on how HIV and AIDS can be mainstreamed into their sector plans.

The meeting also informed Ministry officials about the planned Training of Trainers Workshop on mainstreaming HIV and AIDS scheduled to be held in April for all the HIV focal persons appointed to each Ministry, to ensure that mainstreaming HIV and AIDS becomes an integral part of the core business of each Ministry.

Resulting from the meeting, it was agreed that UNDP, in collaboration with the National AIDS Secretariat, will continue to provide assistance and technical advice to all line ministries in this respect.

Background

The consultative meeting came out of a ‘training of trainers’ workshop on HIV and AIDS mainstreaming which was organised by the UNDP Regional Centre for Eastern and Southern Africa, in collaboration with the ECOWAS Secretariat. This meeting, which took place in Dakar in November, was attended by Sierra Leone participants. One of the conclusions of the workshop was to replicate the knowledge acquired in each of the participants countries; hence the consultative meeting in Freetown.
