HIV and AIDS to be mainstreamed within Government

19-06-2008

Freetown, Sierra Leone --- Thursday, 19 June 2008 --- The Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, together with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the National AIDS Secretariat, organised a two and a half day ‘HIV and AIDS Mainstreaming’ training of trainers workshop for HIV focal persons of the Government’s twenty line ministries. The workshop took place in Freetown from the 19–21 June 2008.

The main objective of the workshop was to create a pool of trainers who understand the concept of mainstreaming, and who are responsible for introducing it within Government ministries, departments and agencies, as well as ensuring that HIV and AIDS become an integral aspect in the process of budget allocation, as stipulated in the Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (PRSP).

The workshop was organised out of recommendations from a previous workshop supported by the UNDP Regional Centre for Eastern and Southern Africa, together with the ECOWAS Secretariat. This training of trainers workshop on ‘Mainstreaming HIV and AIDS’ was held in November 2007 in Dakar, Senegal, and was attended by participants from Sierra Leone. One of the major conclusions of the workshop was to replicate the knowledge acquired to members in each of the participating countries.
