United Nations Media Club

Created as an initiative of the UNDP, the United Nations Media Club was launched on the occasion of ‘Press Freedom Day’, 3 May 2006. The UN Media Club aims to foster an improved understanding of the issues related to human development and poverty reduction, and to educate the press to report accurately and professionally on these issues. It seeks to establish and build close working relations with the media, and to create an outlet for media professionals to meet and discuss development in Sierra Leone, pushing the issues surrounding it to the forefront of the news. UN Media Club will create a forum for the communication and organization of media activities through press conferences, debates and radio/TV programmes.

Introduction of a ‘Development Forum’
The Development Forum for journalists is held every two to three months under the mandate of the UN Media Club. The profile of that forum reaches beyond sheer knowledge generation and is attended by journalists to better qualify them for the difficult coverage of development topics.

The first Development Forum was held on 2 August 2006, and discussed the water shortage at the time in Freetown. Guest speakers at the forum included Mr. Andrew K. Keili, Executive Director, Cemmats Group Ltd., Mr. Alfred Barlatt, Operations Manager, SALWACO and Mr. George Saquee, Project Officer, UNICEF.

The second Development Forum was held on 10 November 2006, and discussed the upcoming Consultative Group (CG) meeting, scheduled to take place in Freetown from 29-30 November.
