The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in South Sudan has focused on helping the Government of South Sudan to build state institutions leading up first to the January 2011 referendum on self-determination, and then to the declaration of independence on 9 July, 2011.

With a 2011 budget of more than US$170 million, UNDP South Sudan is one of UNDP's largest country programmes. It has drawn on its more than 30 years of experience in the country, as well as its expertise in managing post-crisis situations around the globe, to effectively manage donor funds in South Sudan and achieve marked results in the areas of Democratic Governance, Crisis Prevention and Recovery, and Poverty Reduction.
