Who we are

The UNDP Sierra Leone Country Office is a valued, trusted and reliable adviser to, and development partner with, the Government of Sierra Leone and other stakeholders in national development. As Sierra Leone builds its own development solutions, UNDP provides ideas for strategic development projects and capacity building in support of continued efforts to eradicate pockets of extreme poverty, improve gender equality, reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS, promote and protect human rights and enhance environmental management.

Since the end of the civil conflict in 2002, UNDP has focused its advocacy and resources on assisting the Government and people of Sierra Leone in addressing the fundamental causes as well as the immediate consequences of the war. Working closely with the Government, civil society and other UN agencies, UNDP has shifted its emphasis from short-term stabilization measures to transformative initiatives that address the origins of the conflict within the overarching framework of the Millennium Development Goals.

Based on the UN Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) for Sierra Leone, UNDP's operational strategy focuses on three, inter-linked focus areas:

Within each of these areas, a mix of interventions are underway that balance immediate needs for rehabilitation and reconstruction with the longer term objectives of reform and capacity building to assist the country move to the path of sustainable development.
